Knowing how to deal with revenge porn

Monika woke up to the sound of her buzzing mobile. She had missed 25 calls from her friend Rose. When she called back, she was aghast. Rose informed Monica that her scantily-clad private pictures were all over the Internet. Monica immediately went online to confirm if her pictures were really up and moving around? On finding the truth, she was crestfallen. She had never felt so cheated, disgraced and defamed. Apparently, this was her ex James’ modus operandi with whom she had broken off several months ago.  Monica could not believe that she was a victim of revenge porn.

Like Monica, chores of individuals across the United States are struggling with this relatively new form of cybercrime. Also known as non-consensual pornography, revenge porn is an act of releasing the sexual and private pictures of an individual on online platforms without consent or knowledge of the victim. The perpetrator usually has a motive of avenging an individual because of a broken relationship. Sometimes, celebrities often fall prey to this when their social media accounts are hacked and their personal pictures are released on the web. Revenge porn can have far-reaching consequences. The victim may feel so depressed and dejected that he or she may try to commit suicide.

However, there are ways to deal with this and some of these have been detailed hereunder:

Evidences must be saved – When one comes across his or her objectionable pictures on the web and wants them to be taken down immediately, it is important to save the evidence and this can be done by saving those web pages, and taking screenshots or printouts. One can get the desired support from the authorities based on the evidence.

Violations must be reported – Once the evidences are saved, the next step is to report the violations to the concerned authorities. Google and Microsoft have recently declared their quest against revenge porn whereby a user can request for removal of their objectionable images from the search engines. Even though the pictures are not deleted immediately, the search engines do limit the frequency of pop-ups when one searches for images by name. In addition, this must also be reported to the police for the purpose of having official records.

Google alert must be setup – If the victim’s photos are available on the internet attached to his or her name, one can set up a Google alert so that everytime the pictures are released on a new platform, one is immediately informed and take suitable action.

Legal and other resources must be sought – The victim can use the services of a lawyer to end the harassment. One should look up sites having the list of lawyers who help such victims. Additionally, sites like cyber civil rights initiative and without my consent help victims through counseling and legal assistance.

Know when to seek help

When someone gets embroiled in revenge porn, it is an arduous task to take down the pictures because of the unavailability of concrete laws. This can get overwhelmingly disturbing for a victim who might develop loss of self-worth, feeling of hopelessness, stress, persistent sadness and depression. Soon, the depressive symptoms can start affecting every day functioning if one continues to ignore them. While one strives to get legal support, he/she should also consult a mental health expert if the mental health appears deteriorating.
